Snow-wize the weather forecasts have been close to perfect last week. It is cold and white in Ingolstadt as we leave town before sunset. Work has been done and we are ready for some action. Uli is our Transporter into snowboarder's paradise. The bus, packed with food and equipment for the following days, is cosy and warm. "A little bit more heating for the rear please!". As the temperature outside drops, the weekend fever rises. We hit the Zillertal around ten P.M. A night drive into the mountains, accompanied by steep slopes of white powder. The bus slips and slides before it comes to an hold at our location. Jens had a lucky hand and a fine pick. A truly original Austrian Alm will be our hideout for the days to come. Lots of wood, lots of tradition and a perfect view on the valley.
On saturday this view has turned into a gray soup. As we jump out of the lift, ready for some carves, it does not get any better. I wonder if I am going up or down as we take number 14. Blue for an easy start into the new season. Many uneasy rides follow before we go back home. The snow is ace, but the weather was not.
Sunday. An easy going breakfast is followed up by the hectic of packing our stuff together. All of this is not without a reason. The skies above the Zillertal display different shades of blue and we are ready to rumble. Five hours of perfect condition will follow, interrupted by a fine lunch on the "Hutte". Rides on, nearby and off the piste until the last lift comes to a hold. I scrape the powder off my board before it disappears into the bag. First weekend this year, and hopefully many to follow!
